Creating Opportunity

“As we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).

Today, let’s break down this short passage into three parts.

“As we have opportunity.”

“Let us do good to everyone.”

“Especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

Let’s deal with the last two first. God wants us to do good to people whether they believe in Jesus or not. For the unbeliever, acts of kindness and sacrifice can help lead them into a relationship with the Lord. And for the believer, such acts unify brothers and can serve as an expression of God’s love to them.

But what about opportunity? There are three kinds of people along with opportunity. The first is a person who doesn’t recognize opportunities in front of him. He or she may see a need, but not recognize how they can meet that need. Such a person needs a little nudge, some encouragement to recognize it, and even a partner to meet it.

The second person is one who recognizes the opportunity and seeks to meet it. Such people are often gifted with the ministry of helps. Or just plain want to love someone.

The third person is someone we should all aspire to be. It is the person who creates opportunity. This is the person who goes out seeking to do good. And if he doesn’t see an opportunity he tries to make one. He looks proactively for ways to express love and care for another person. This is who I want to be. How about you?
